Jane & the Magic v10.0
From Tales of Boris a Novel in Progress
Jan 1997 to 13 October 2003
1. The City - Immediately Before The First Time
In the city two in bed on a warm summer's night ... no pyjamas. A teddy bear between her feet and his feet. There is a simplicity to the room, empty of everything except them, the bear, the bed and the magic. Only their eyes and the magic hanging from the ceiling appear real. everything else seems synthetic, a display in a contemporary art exhibition. Their bodies appear to be elaborate experiments in design, suitable for pictures in coffee table books and brand name pin cushions.
The evening has smudged and smeared, dirtied itself into night. They are in bed staring at the magic hanging from the ceiling, waiting for it to happen.
The evening is left behind. Their eyes are moon shiny. Lying side by side, the back of his hand caresses her thigh. She savours the touch, its lightness, its quietness.
Stuck to the ceiling and hanging from a blob of blu-tac is a piece of red wool ... and on the end of the red wool, a lattice of criss crossed Paddle Pop sticks.
It's simple. We've read the instructions: sleep and dream ... and when you wake up wash. But this is our first time. What are we doing? What are we hoping to find?
Together, Jane and I gaze up into the magic and we dream.
But I'm proceeding to quickly, rushing far and away beyond myself. Let me explain how this all came to be. Let me tell you how I met Jane, loved her, lost her and ate tiger moths by candlelight.
